“AMEN SONGS”: Amen Shem Nora
December 4, 2024
Cantor Eyal Bitton highlights a song that connects with this year’s Congregation Neveh Shalom theme, “Amen – Be a Blessing.”
The Sephardic song “Amen Shem Nora” is a profound example of how music can transform a simple “Amen” into an act of devotion and blessing. This traditional melody invokes joy, reverence, and triumph for God’s name, perfectly capturing the spirit of “Amen – Be a Blessing.” Its repetition of “Amen” emphasizes the power of affirming our love for our heritage and for expressing blessings in song.
This Sephardic piyut “was included in the compendium Shirim uzemirot vetushbahot (Constantinople, 1545), one of the earliest printed collections of religious Hebrew poems, many of which were written by Shlomo Mazal Tov, a prominent poet who lived in Saloniki and Turkey. The melody is one of the favorite old tunes of the Western Sephardi repertoire. Variants of it were recorded among the Sephardi Jews in Italy and Southern France too.” (Jewish Music Resource Centre.)
In Parashat Vayetzei, Jacob’s dream of the ladder connecting heaven and earth serves as a powerful metaphor for the connection between the divine and the human. “Amen Shem Nora” echoes this theme, reminding us that our words and actions can bridge the gap between our aspirations and God’s blessings. Jacob’s journey, like the song, teaches us that even in moments of uncertainty, our faith can guide us to recognize and affirm the blessings that surround us.
