AMEN SONGS: Bridge Over Troubled Water

July 19, 2025

Rabbi Cantor Eyal Bitton highlights a song that connects with this year’s Congregation Neveh Shalom theme, “Amen – Be a Blessing.”

Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water” is a powerful anthem of comfort, selflessness, and unwavering support. With lyrics like, “When you’re weary, feeling small… I will lay me down,” the song gives voice to the sacred act of standing by someone in their time of need. It speaks to the quiet heroism of those who choose to carry others through their hardships—not for recognition, but out of love and compassion. That message lies at the heart of our theme, “Amen – Be a Blessing.” To be a blessing is to be a steady presence when others falter, to be a bridge over their troubled waters. This song reminds us that blessing someone doesn’t always mean offering solutions—it can simply mean being there, offering our strength when theirs is gone.

This idea of quiet heroism is also central to Parashat Pinchas. In the parasha, we see two contrasting acts of strength: first, the bold zeal of Pinchas, and then the quieter, ongoing leadership of Moses as he prepares to pass the mantle to Joshua. Joshua, unlike Moses or Pinchas, is not known for grand gestures. Instead, he leads with steadfastness, humility, and endurance. Like the “bridge” in the song, Joshua becomes a stable and trustworthy guide for the people as they enter a new and uncertain chapter. “Bridge Over Troubled Water” echoes this same leadership—gentle yet powerful, offering presence and protection even when the road is hard.

To be a leader, a friend, or a blessing does not always require dramatic action. Sometimes, it means offering stillness and support, letting someone lean on us until they find their footing again. “Bridge Over Troubled Water” invites us to reflect on how we show up for others—not with grandeur, but with grace. As we read Parashat Pinchas and reflect on the transitions of leadership and legacy, we are reminded that strength often looks like quiet consistency, and that one of the greatest blessings we can offer is the promise: I will carry you when you can’t carry yourself.

BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER

When you’re weary
Feeling small
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all
I’m on your side

Oh, when times get rough
And friends just can’t be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

When you’re down and out
When you’re on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you
I’ll take your part

Oh, when darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Sail on, silver girl
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
Oh, if you need a friend
I’m sailing right behind

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
