AMEN SONGS: For Good (Wicked)
June 11, 2025
Cantor Eyal Bitton highlights a song that connects with this year’s Congregation Neveh Shalom theme, “Amen – Be a Blessing.”
“For Good” from the Broadway musical Wicked is a tender and powerful tribute to the people who change us—those whose presence in our lives, whether brief or enduring, leaves a lasting impact. With the poignant refrain, “Because I knew you, I have been changed for good,” the song speaks to the profound blessing of relationships that shape who we are. It’s a song about gratitude, forgiveness, and the beauty of mutual growth. In the spirit of our theme, “Amen – Be a Blessing,” “For Good” reminds us that one of the greatest blessings we can offer is ourselves—our care, our influence, and our willingness to be changed by others. To bless someone doesn’t always mean to help or fix—it can simply mean to walk beside them and allow the connection to transform us both.
This message resonates deeply with Parashat Beha’alotcha, which chronicles moments of transition, growth, and challenge as the Israelites journey through the wilderness. We read of their complaints, their struggles with leadership, and the evolving relationship between Moses and the people. In the midst of this, we also see moments of support, like the appointment of the seventy elders to help Moses bear the burden of leadership. These shared responsibilities and relationships mirror the message of “For Good”—that no one walks this journey alone, and that the people we travel with shape the person we become. Even the challenges in our relationships can lead to deeper understanding, if we allow ourselves to grow through them.
“For Good” also invites reflection on legacy. As the Israelites prepare to move forward in their journey, and as Moses continues to lead amid growing complexity, we are reminded that every life we touch becomes part of our spiritual story. Each moment of kindness, each word of encouragement, leaves a mark. Parashat Beha’alotcha and “For Good” both challenge us to be aware of the influence we carry—and to use it well. When we live with intention, humility, and love, we bless others simply by being present in their lives. And in doing so, we too are blessed, changed, and made better for good.
